From November to April, Mirissa’s harbour is known as the best place to charter a boat for whale and dolphin watching. Mirissa’s tourist settlement arose in response to backpackers flocking there to enjoy hours of paragliding, body boarding, sea kayaking, snorkelling, and diving. During the months of September to April, the seas are ideal for surfing.

Although upmarket properties are opening nearby, the beach at Mirissa is popular with both budget and mainstream tourists. It is located 150 kilometres south of Colombo on the south coast road and is easily accessible via the new Southern Expressway from Colombo to Matara. The best beach cove is east of the headland that separates Mirissa and Weligama Bay, and it is lined with sunbeds and restaurants in thatched shacks.
