What to do in Kandy?
The gateway to all the activity in the hill area (and the best train ride in the world!) is Kandy, the island’s second-largest city and undeniable historical and cultural center.
Thanks to its location and inaccessible terrain, the magnificent ancient Kingdom of Kandy was able to repel both Portuguese and Dutch colonizers throughout the 1500s and 1600s, turning into the final stronghold of independent Ceylon. Because of this, the city was able to maintain the distinctive customs, culture, and arts that had been forcibly eradicated everywhere in the nation until 1815, when it finally fell under British rule. Visit or take part in any of these activities and you will too fall in love with Kandy like any other Sri Lankan.
