Pidurangala Rock, which stands 199 metres tall, has a long history that is thought to date back to the second century BC and is where King Kashyapa built a monastery. According to ancient records, the king gave the temple to monks who had previously resided at Sigiriya before constructing the magnificent structure atop Sigiriya Rock. The temple was made up of five structures known as ‘Panchavasa,’ some of which can still be seen during your visit.

After about 20 minutes of manoeuvring the relatively easy pathway leading to the massive rock formation, you will come across a ledge with remnants of ancient brickwork.

The brickwork was allegedly used to divide meditational spaces for the monks. A massive 46-foot recumbent Buddha can be seen at the cavern’s deepest point. This was once the largest brick statue of a reclining Buddha statue and provides insight into the rock’s rich history.
