Sigiriya & Dambulla
Both a palace and a fortress of breathtaking magnificence, Sigiriya is a monument to its clever architects. Not to be forgotten is the King who desired a Sri Lanka vacation package in a palace with a terrace and a mirror wall erected on top of a flat rock. The famous Lion gate, which gives Sigiriya its name, serves as the entry, making it the ideal destination for a custom vacation in Sri Lanka. Twenty of the roughly 600 sensually alluring beauties shown in the paintings of Heavenly Maidens, which date to the reign of the playboy King Kashyappa, vividly depict the delights of a pure past in the country you picked for your Sri Lanka holiday. Sigiriya is a masterpiece of architecture and a prime example of city planning in the first century. You’ll be surprised to learn that a park with a symmetrical layout intended to suit the king’s laziness nevertheless has water-retaining structures with clever surface and subsurface hydraulic systems.
The Dambulla Cave Temple, the most revered cave temple in Asia, dates back to the first century BC. Its five chambers are hidden behind a huge boulder that hangs over the temple. A drip line is cut on the underside of the Rock to keep the inside dry. The ceilings of the caverns are decorated with elaborate patterns of sacred symbols that have been painstakingly painted to follow the natural curves of the rock. Inside, there are pictures of the Buddha, bodhisattvas, gods, and goddesses. The cave monastery is still Sri Lanka’s best-preserved ancient building, dating to the second and third centuries BC. It is still a functioning shrine today, attracting tens of thousands of followers and inquisitive onlookers.
