Weligama
Weligama, which translates to “sandy village” in the local tongue, is a charming fishing community famous for its stilt fishermen. Stilt fisherman use an unusual technique of fishing in which they balance on 50-meter poles in shallow water and cast their lines out to sea. They are a common sight in the sea for onlookers. Weligama used to be a less popular tourist destination with long lengths of deserted beaches, but in more recent years it has developed into a well-known surf location with a number of iconic surfing locations. It’s a great location to unwind after spending a few hours whale watching on the open waters because it’s so near to Mirissa. Along with extensive cinnamon and rubber plantations, it is also home to the vacation island Taprobane, the Dondra Lighthouse constructed during the British Colonial era, and many other landmarks. Devil dancers and snake farms are also a part of the adventure.
