The Puttalam lagoon’s Kalpitiya is home to a community of traditional fisherman families that live comfortably by the water. The lagoon is one of Sri Lanka’s biggest, with a water surface area of over 32,750ha. The Kalaoya estuary, one of Sri Lanka’s largest mangrove ecosystems, the Meeoya estuary, the Dutch Bay, and the Portugal Bay are among the beautiful features.
There are several coral reefs, sea grass beds, and mangroves at Kalpitiya and the nearby small islands. The combination creates a paradise for swimming, snorkeling, and observing whales and dolphins while on a lengthy holiday in Sri Lanka.
