Matara
The Nilwala River mouth is where Matara is located, farther south of Galle. The Great Ford is the name of the place where it is located. It was a significant commercial hub both during Portuguese and Dutch control. Matara is a lively town tucked between sandy beaches and the pastoral countryside, with sand beaches, aromatic spice plantations, and green paddy fields. It boasts a 1640 Dutch fort facing the Indian Ocean that is still in good condition. It is a Portuguese garrison’s fortress. Many buildings from the Dutch and British eras may be found in the fort. The Dutch church is the oldest colonial structure still drawing attention. Six kilometers distant is the 40-meter-high lighthouse that was constructed in 1890 to guide ships using the busy shipping channel when radar wasn’t yet available. The ancient Hindu shrine to Vishnu, whom Buddhists revere as the God tasked with preserving Buddhism in Sri Lanka, sits nearby.
Unspoiled beaches are available at Polhena, which is 3 kilometers distant. Excellent swimming and snorkeling are possible at the coral reef. It is a popular tourist destination in Sri Lanka thanks to the winds and waves that provide superb surfing opportunities.
